Today, a long tail boat from Phuket to James Bond Island remains the most direct method to reach Ko Tapu and its surrounding archipelago. Departures run daily from 08:30 to 16:30, with morning slots avoiding the midday heat that settles over the bay's sheltered inlets. The journey covers roughly 25 kilometres northeast from Phuket's eastern shore, threading between vertical karst formations that rise 100 to 300 metres from water barely six metres deep at high tide. Operators typically include stops at Koh Panyee—a stilted Muslim fishing village established in the late 18th century—and Hong Island's interior lagoon, accessible only during slack tide when the surrounding cliffs reveal low passages.
The longtail's shallow draft and hand-steered rudder allow captains to beach directly on Ko Tapu's small shore platform, where a 300-baht conservation fee applies to foreign visitors. The island itself prohibits climbing; its needle profile, 20 metres tall and four metres wide at the base, has eroded measurably since the 1970s due to wave action and the weight of accumulated guano. Phang Nga Bay's 42 islands earned UNESCO consideration in 2011 for their karst topography—a limestone landscape shaped by 280 million years of tectonic uplift and monsoon dissolution.
